If you happen to have a vehicle that you intend to keep in a long term storage facility, you’ll want to take a few provisional steps to ensure that the car or truck is still usable once you decide to move it. In cases where vehicles are stored for a year or longer, we have some tips to help you prepare.
Step 1 – The first step is the decision on where to store the vehicle. Ideally, it should be stored somewhere indoors in a warehouse of garage, however if you must leave it exposed, it should be protected through the use of a car cover or larger tarp. Either way, a tarp is a wonderful way to minimize the amount of dust and grime that can accumulate over a period of time.
Step 2 – Next, you will need to elevate the car off the ground. As cars and trucks sit for long periods of time, tires begin to lose air pressure and eventually go flat. Tires left flat for long enough eventually become damaged. Elevating them will prevent excess loss of pressure.
Step 3 – Check the emergency brake. While the wheels have now been elevated, it is important to disengage the emergency brake for fear that the pads may become stuck in place. If this were to happen, it would be the cause of additional repairs, resulting in added time spent before you were able to get the vehicle on the road again.
Step 4 – The battery should be disconnected and removed from the engine area. In models were you are able to check the water level and add to it, do so to make certain it is at the proper level. This technique may save you from having to purchase a new battery when it’s time to leave the long term storage facility.
Step 5 – As a safety precaution, make sure the fuel tank is empty. If your automobile is allowed to sit for many years, moisture in the tank can lead to rust formations. If you’re planning on leaving the vehicle in long term storage for a year or longer, this procedure should be considered.
Step 6 – Give the vehicle a good cleaning. Even though dust may accumulate on the exterior, just think what it’ll be like jumping into a perfectly clean car after a long term storage. A cover should be applied to the car as well, even if you’re storing inside.
