Public Private partnerships

We have identified 42 organizations within our district that could be pivotal in providing support for our central area schools. But we are not organized to create this synergy currently at the Seattle School District. We need a distinct strategy within our strategic plan to address the utilization of these resources. In doing so, we can be incredibly proficient and in sync with other organizations offering the same services and skill sets we currently offer in many of our after school programs.

  1. This is such an important step for Seattle Public Schools to take. The resources are there, we just need leaders who will utilize them in the most efficient way possible. Great idea Kay!

    I like the idea, but could you be a little more specific? What services specifically are you thinking about utilizing private companies for? How can we use this idea to keep costs down and still provide quality services to our kids?

    I have known Kay since the first grade in Austin Texas, where we grew up. I have watched Kay rise to the top of her industry, from her years with Neiman Marcus as a buyer, to her brilliant success with her husband, creating one of the most prestigious and renowned luxury retail stores in the U.S. I know Kay to be both an incredibly talented and successful business women, and also, as a loving and nurturing mother. She has “had it all” when women were told they could not have both a business career and a “career” of raising children.
    Because of her success with raising brilliant and successful boys,combined with her innovative and successful career in the fashion industry, I know that Kay is the perfect candidate for a School Board Position.

    I therefore, suggest that Kay start a ballroom dancing program for school children. Her experience with raising children would be beneficial for this program. Dance is a universal lanquage, teaching discipline, respect and encouraging creativity. Please vist the “Red Hot Ballroom” dance program site, and see the documentary film, to learn how this program has changed the lives of so many underprivileged school children.
    Dance is fun and inspiring and with Kay at the helm, this program could be just another one of Kay’s many accomplishments
    It is rare that a friendship can endure for over 40 years, as our’s has. I believe that our unique friendship is a testament to Kay’s commitment and loyalty to a “project”.
    I strongly believe in Kay’s ability to have a wonderful and positive impact on the Seattle School Board and highly recommend that Seattle embrace Kay Smith-Blum as an innovative and exciting community leader.

  4. Blanche – GREAT to hear ideas for the East Coast – thanks – love the idea of Ballroom dancing being an athletic choice in our schools – totally now!
    Instead of watching Dancing with the Stars from our couches – let’s watch OUR stars dance – the students of Seattle Schools!

  5. Michelle, an example would be asking one bank in each reference area to teach fiscal literacy at K-12 level. This would be part of the curriculum, required for all children. There is a company, Moonjar, that has developed a fiscal literacy curriculum for K-5. WE could ask for private foundations to fund their materials in all our elementary schools and instantly have a program that is proven.
